Objectives :
Exploring four types of tissues.
 Comparing four types of tissues :
 Nervous,
 Connective
 Epithelial,
 and muscular tissues.

From Tissues to organs
Cells combine to form tissues and tissues
combine to form organs.
 Cells combine to form four primary tissues:
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Muscle tissue
- Nerve tissue

tissue is a group
of cells that have a similar shape
and function.  Different types of
tissues can be found in different
organs.  In humans, there are four
basic types of tissue:  epithelial,
connective, muscular, and nervous
tissue.  There may be various subtissues within each of the primary tissues.

In pairs discuss the types of tissues found in
human body
 What idea do you develop of their functions
in body?

Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial tissue covers the body surface and
forms the lining for most internal cavities.
There are two kinds of epithelial tissues:
 Covering and lining epithelium covers or lines
almost all of your internal and external body
surfaces; for example, the outermost layer of your
skin and other organs, and the internal surface
lining of your lymph vessels and digestive tract.
 Glandular epithelium secretes hormones or other
products such as stomach acid, sweat, saliva, and

Function and shapes of
epithelial tissue:

The major function of epithelial tissue
includes protection, secretion, absorption,
and filtration.  The skin is an organ made up
of epithelial tissue which protects the body
from dirt, dust, bacteria and other microbes
that may be harmful.   Cells of the epithelial
tissue have different shapes. Cells can be:

Functions of Epithelial
Functions (jobs):
 1) It protects us from the outside world –
 2) Absorbs – stomach and intestinal lining
 3) Filters – the kidney
 4) Secretes – forms glands

Classification of epithelial
Classifications (types):
1) By shape
 a) squamous - flat and scale-like
 b) cuboidal - as tall as they are wide
 c) columnar - tall, column-shaped

2) By cell arrangement
 a)

simple epithelium - single layer of
cells (usually for absorption and
 b) stratified epithelium - stacked up
call layers (protection from abrasion
(rubbing) - mouth, skin.)

In pairs discuss and write the :
 Definition of tissue
 Types of tissues
 Where in human body epithelial
tissues are located?

Connective tissue
Connective tissue is the most abundant
and the most widely distributed of the
 Connective tissues perform a variety of
functions including support and

Types and examples of
connective tissue:
The following tissues are found in the human
 ordinary loose connective tissue
 fat tissue
 dense fibrous tissue
 cartilage
 bone
 Blood
 and lymph, which are all considered
connective tissue.

Areolar tissue

Areolar tissue has no specific pattern or structure.
It is made up of cells and extra cellular
matrix(extracellular is material out side of the

Matrix has two components,
fibres and ground substance.
 In this image you can see the fibres like threads.

Connective tissue:

1) Wraps around and cushions and

protects organs
 2) Stores nutrients
 3) Internal support for organs
 4) As tendon and ligaments protects
joints and attached muscles to bone
and each other

1) Cartilage
 Functions (jobs):
 1) provides strength with flexibility
while resisting wear, i.e. epiglottis,
external ear, larynx
 2) cushions and shock absorbs where
bones meet, i.e....
