The Black Death Document Based Question Essay
Step 1: Annotate the Documents
A. Read each document carefully, underlining key phrases and words that address the essay question. Use the margins to record possible bucket categories for each document and to make brief notes to use in your essay. (For at timed-essay test you are usually given 15mns for this.)
Step 2: Bucket the Documents
A. Decide which documents belong together because they have something in common. Group the documents in the most obvious way. Show some sort of insight into how the documents relate to each other. 1. Bucket every document!
2. Documents can be in more than one bucket and a document can be alone in its own bucket. 3. Be sure to label the bucket names in the TOP SECTION OF THE BUCKET!!!
Step 3: Develop a Thesis
A. Thesis: your opinion of the given topic. Write a thesis to answer the given question – The Black Death: How different were Christian and Muslim responses?
B. A thesis creates a structure for your essay but does NOT provide any supporting detail.
